QHUD v5.00 Topaz Series

QHUD v5.00 Topaz Series, aka Quantum Topaz HUD, or QThud for short!

The QHUD v5.00 'Topaz Series' is a totally new product written from scratch to take advantage of all the new scripting functions that have been added since QHUD v4 was originally designed.

QHUD v5.00 is as different from QHUD v4.00 as QHUD v4.00 was from the original Quantum Core v3.00.

QThud has a nice low script time usage of 0.022ms and less than 400k of memory usage! My goal here was to make QThud into a HUD you can use anywhere without some 'crybaby' telling you to take it off.

The initial release of QHUDv5 will only go to the 2,164 people who have donated using their QHUD prior to Friday the 13th of January 2012. I decided it is only fair to reward those who have supported me.

In case your wondering, those blue crystals I use in the shields are Topaz, my favourite gem stone. Thus the name Topaz Series.

Elisabeth Sladen was sadly taken from us by cancer this week.

She will be remembered until the end of time.

Going where no griefer has gone before...

I met William Shatner last night in Melbourne! I spent the night listening to him talk about his exceptional life. I even scored myself a copy of his new book "Up until Now" which I am already enjoying.

William wasn't anything like those stories you hear about Hollywood actors. He is a warm, friendly, approachable, father figure who seemed to enjoy poking fun at himself.

William didn't just talk about his rolls in things like StarTrek and Boston Legal, he shared everything from personal tragedies to delightful stories about taking his children skying.

Listening to him I found myself wanting to go up and hug the man, then I remembered the Denny Crane character and I backed away slowly :)

I enjoyed the night immensely and would highly recommend spending a night with William Shatner if you ever have the opportunity. He changed my life. Like William, I will now be saying YES before I answer the phone too.

Thank you for coming to my city so I could meet you.

PS. The only disappointing thing about the whole night is that not one single person turned up dressed in a StarTrek costume. Nerds of Melbourne, shame on you!

NeilLife - The untold Story

Back in 2009 a school kid by the name of Neil decided to sell a TPV (Third Part Viewer) program called NeilLife that was designed to facilitate theft of EVERYTHING in Second Life.

This viewer could open no-mod scripts, it could make a no-copy object copyable, and a no-transfer object transferable. Basically it let people alter the permissions on anything at all.

The NeilLife viewer was advertised by distributing content that was stolen using the NeilLife viewer itself. Neil used his viewer to make popular and expensive products full permission. He then renamed the full permission copy of the product to include "stolen by NeilLife" in its name, before distributing them for free to as many people as he could.

Example: The no-transfer "QHUD" became a full permissions item called "QHUD - stolen by NeilLife".

I first saw a stolen copy of my QHUD in June 2009. It was set to full permission and was being distributed all over the grid for free. I immediately purchased a copy of NeilLife from Neil for $500 US Dollars. The copy of NeilLife I purchased was uploaded to Cogsworth Linden the very same day.

Many Lindens were kept busy for several months analysing the NeilLife viewer. They extracted every single permissions exploit, hack, and dirty trick Neil had put in it. The Lindens rolled out many new server versions in late 2009/early 2010 to close the exploits used by the NeilLife viewer.

As I had purchased a legitimate registered copy of Neil's viewer, the Lindens were able to get upgrades, beta versions, and access all of Neil's customer support.

I remember one of the Lindens having a laugh about rolling out a fix for a permission exploit the day before Neil was due to make it available in an upgrade to his viewer.

All this was going on silently in the background long before publications like the AlphavilleHerald broke the story on content theft in late October 2009. ( http://alphavilleherald.com/2009/10/stolen-goods-freeforall-at-burning-life.html )

I would like to thank Cogsworth Linden, Oskar Linden, Andrew Linden, and Fred Rookstown, among others for working together to prevent theft from hard working creators all over Second Life. We all owe them all a debt of gratitude for helping to protect the products we worked so hard to create.

Today I tried to rally support for a JIRA to add additional protection to scripts. I was met by resistance from an ignorant person who had no clue all this had been happening. I realized it was time for the untold story to be told.

QHUD Scripts are Trojan

People are passing around a RAR file that claims to be stolen QHUD scripts.

The file is really the win32:vbmod Trojan, a type of virus.

While I would like to encourage scammers to download lots of Trojans, I feel it is my responsibility to warn everyone that they are Trojans.

QHUD has always been protected from having it's scripts stolen because the scripts have been removed from the asset server database. Not even I can re-open them.

Dear Customers,

Recently I was shown screen captures of conversations from an organized group, which including some of my trusted beta testers, who's goal was to undermine Quantum.

They didn't like the fact that Quantum was putting powerful weapons into the hands of regular people. They wanted to be the only ones who had that kind of power, and were willing to destroy anyone who threatened their elite status.

They never approached me about stuff they felt was wrong or dangerous, they just appointed themselves the guardians of acceptable weapons and set out to undermine my business through the use of dirty tactics.

The criminal attacks on my customer database, release of my source code to competitors, altering permissions, constant harassment in the JIRA, forums, and in world were all organized by this small group of so called elite combat people.

My anger at what they did has motivated me to rebuild. So to those people, and you know who you are, I say this;

"Your deception has backfired. It has made me more determined to share the very best of weapons tech with every one of my customers."

Scammer Go Poof

The stolen list claimed another scammer today.

Loron Xue's scammer days ended abruptly when Linden Labs banned him for distrobuting stolen content.

In what has become a daily event, the victims of people like Loron Xue file abuse reports with Linden Labs, who then ban the scammers. Every day I am removing people's names from the stolen list after they help in having a scammer banned.

Every time we get rid of a dishonest scammer it helps honest creators earn an income from the products they have created.

The people who don't get removed from the Thieves List are the people who have chosen not to report stolen content, or they are scammers themselves. Feel free to ban them, I know I do!

There are scammers everywhere....

In 1987 Canada published a study showing how discarded fishing nets kill 100,000 marine mammals every 3 years.

In 2002 the Australian government published a report based on this study saying that Plastic Shopping Bags kill 100,000 marine mammals a year.

In 2009 an Australian petrol company, who claims they are environmentally responsible, switched to paper bags to save the marine mammals.

In 2010 it was noted that paper bags are significantly bulkier, requiring more trucks and fuel to transport the same number of bags.

The petrol company has found a cleaver way to sell more fuel to trucking companies, while conning their customers into buying the paper bags with a story about saving marine mammals!

...so what has this got to do with SecondLife? ...nothing, I just hate having to pay for bags!

How many times have you received a message from some rude person who feels that you must respond to them immediatly or else! Today I got a message from someone who takes the ticking-clock to a whole new level.

Forget the fact Birsy Halostar didnt read the webpage she was sent which has the information she wanted. Forget that she has been caught with a stolen QHUD. What is really important is that now people can charge us L$50 per minute for not replying to them!

At the time of writing this blog I apparently owe more than L$15000. This rudness has inspired me to see just how high I can get that number to go!

Interpol After Darling Brody

Today a Lawyer contacted me to inform me that I must remove the thieves list to avoid being prosecuted.

This lawyer from Brazil who contacted me using his very official SecondLife avatar said that I have allegedly violated the privacy of avatars whose names I have listed.

According to Mr Brazilian Lawyer's complaint, I have linked my page to their SL profiles which he claims is a violation of their avatar privacy, under the privacy laws. Apparently I have also defamed these avatars by publicly stating they have obtained my products without paying for them, even though they really did obtain my products without paying for them.

If I do not immediately remove my thieves list, the following action will be taken against me:

Interpol is going to be contacting Linden Labs to obtain my RL details.
Linden Labs are going to hand over my real life details because they know I am bad.
Interpol will then charge me with defamation of people's avatars.
The avatars will also prosecute me for defamation of their good name.
I will be required to pay 500,000 euros to each of the 23 avatars, as is the law.
Linden Labs are also going to be sued for having the public avatar profiles listed publicly.

If this all sounds as silly to you as it did to me, keep in mind this guy told me he was serious and that I am in big trouble. So it must be serious!

Among the other "serious" matters this Brazilian Lawyer brought to my attention, I am required by LAW to speak to him on Skype. He said this is because he must make sure I am not a kid before he goes ahead and sues me. If I do not speak to him on Skype he will have to contact my parents.

I did try to explain that an avatar is not a legal entity and can't legally suffer damages to it's reputation. I also explained that truth is a defense to any defamation accusation. I pointed out the thieves list gives the time, date, location, and asset ID of the stolen item. To which I got this show stopper of a reply...

Paper bag are dangerous

BP service station mames Darling Brody

Tonight I purchased a 1.25Ltr drink and a packet of tim tams. Paid 15 cents for a paper page to carry them in. And suffered trauma to my foot when the bag broke and the drink fell onto me. I had not even made it out of the shop!

BP should reconsider the quality of the paper bags they are using. What were the design people thinking by gluing on a paper handle to a paper bag? The handle is only as strong as the small bit of the bag it is attached to. You can’t use a design like that without laminating the paper like everyone else does!

Now that I know I can not use the bags in BP stores I will restrict the number of items I buy to that which fits in my hand. I am sure I am not the only one who will be buying less or going to another shop altogether.

Cutting down trees to make bags that don’t even work is not anyone’s idea of environmentally friendly !

I will expect a refund for the faulty bag in the post and some more sensible decisions regarding bags in the near future.

Darling ends griefers career

Attorney-General Michael Atkinson resigns from his position after receiving an e-mail from Darling Brody threatening to move into his house if he continues to appose the introduction of an R18+ classification for computer games in Australia.

I have personally written to Michael Atkinson asking him to stock his fridge with food and roll out the spare bed because I plan to go live with him when I lose my income from secondlife.

As I have mentioned before Michael Atkinson has been secretly trying to block the introduction of an adults games classification in Australia which will result in Second Life being blocked when the internet censorship is activated.

It would appear that Mr Atkinson has been told about what a terrible house guest I am and has decided to resign from his post as Attorney General.

I say lucky for him! I always drink the last of the milk, leave wet towels on the leather furniture, listen to aggressively cheerful and loud music, block people in with my car, watch tv all night, and refuse to share my chocolate. It's no wonder Mr Atkinson quit politics when confronted with my threats to move into his home.

Scammers feel the pain

Scammers feel the pain as they hunt me down and try to torment me, while I work to remove stolen content.

Today while I was searching for yet more stolen copies of QHUD hidden in freebie boxs at GamersBrand (the place that exists only to furnish griefers with stolen stuff) I met someone who looked very familar.

Sure, she was having a bad hair day, but I must say I really liked her IoW dragon tattoo, and matching jeans.

Of course this was one of the scammers who regularly pick up stolen copies of QHUD to sell on the black market. Clearly he/she recongnised me as I was busy inspecting boxes.

I'm guessing the copybotting of my avatar was either a lame attempt to distract me from locating and removing all the stolen QHUD's, or it was just some pathetic attempt at upsetting me.

Either way I filed an abuse report which I now have on a keyboard macro, and continued to inspect the boxes. The griefer picked up a few boxes and went off to scam unsespecting people using my avatar's appearance to sell stolen QHUDs.

I guess I am doing somthing right if the thieves feel the need to torment me =)

NeilLife Blog

A guy by the name of Neil who deliberatly made and sold a viewer designed to steal content from hard working creators inside the Second Life virtual world has had his blog removed for multipal violations of copyright laws.

The last post neil made on his blog before it went down on him was to publish the BloodLines scripts.

It would appear Neil is now suffering a loss of blood from vital organs, resulting in his blog going down on him. Now Neils blog is as impedant as him!

Script Memory Road Map

This week linden labs made it possible to see the amount of memory a scripted object is using on the beta grid using viewer 2.0.

Linden Labs are planning to limit the amount of memory each parcel of land and avatar is able to use. They need to do this because some people are making scripts that hog memory, which causes the region to use harddisk space as memory, resulting in mega lag! Technically it is called thrashing when the region spends more time moving scripts on and off the harddisk than it does on executing the scripts.

At the moment LSL scripts are using 16k of memory, and mono scripts report they use 64k of memory. So the maths is easy Total_Memory = ((Mono_Scripts * 64k) + (LSL_Scripts * 16k)). This is what the beta grid is reporting as script usage at the moment.

LSL scripts will always report 16k because they really do use 16k on the server no mater what. However mono scripts will soon have the ability to set a value below 64k and then be counted as using that new lower value.

This means that some mono scripts will be able to set their value to 4k and be counted as using only 4k, while others will remain at 64k if they need that much memory. LSL scripts will not be given the ability to reduce their size.

Once we have the ability to reduce the size of scripts we will have the script limits imposed on our avatars and land. Each avatar will have X amount of memory for their attachments, and each parcel of land will have X amount of memory per meter of land.

Linden Labs have stated again this week that they have not decided what those X limits will be, although some people are posting silly guesses in blogs. Kelly Linden did say that he expects some of us may chase them around with a pitchfork when the numbers are released.

The final step in the process will be to let us set a script memory usage above 64k in the same way I described above for lowing the limit. So a script will be able to ask for more memory, if there is memory available.

The hope is that script authors/programmers will try to use as little memory as they can. It has become apparent that some people dont care how much they use, while others try hard to keep their memory usage low. The bad people have forced Linden Labs to enfore a limit. I am sure we all know someone who owns a product that lags the region the moment they arrive!

* Memory will then be limited on a per avatar and per parcel basis

QHUD vs Phenom Memory Usage

After years of listening to Ariu claim that Phenom is scripted better than QHUD we finally see the truth!

That is a total of 10.7 Meg for Phenom which needs the Core and HUD to operate.
Compaire that to only 1.2 Meg for the QHUD. ( Note that QHUD renames itself to Quantum Core when you wear it. QHUD contains the HUD and all the functions in one low memory attachment. )

Phenom entered the market with a big list of claims that turned out to be lies. Ariu said it would have better scripting, and even claimed to have invented half the stuff that was already in the Quantum Core!

In reality we see that Ariu's HUD uses HUGE amounts of memory very inefficiantly, and still manages to suffer from stack heap collisions as it runs out of memory! ( We wont mention that Phenom continuesly replaces its own scripts as they crash from constnant memory overflow errors. )

In a nut shell, Ariu has been caught lying about phenom again. Phenom uses 10 times more memory than the efficiantly scripted QHUD!

Like I always say, Quantum Design vs Phenom Copy.

Michael Atkinson Griefer

Michael Atkinson wants to block SecondLife from the Australian public by secretly funding organisations who are apposed to the introduction of an R18+ video game clasification.

Without this clasification all adult video games on the internet will be blocked by that other griefer Stephen Conroy who is implementing internet cencership.

While Stephen Conroy has been up front about his plans to censorship the internet, Michael Atkinson has been underhanded by funding organisations who are apposing the R18+ games rating.

I have personally written to Michael Atkinson asking him to stock his fridge with food and roll out the spare bed because I plan to go live with him when I lose my income from secondlife.

It will be interesting to see if this sneeky little man is brave enough to reply to me and explain why he feels I need to be unemployed.

GamersBrand Caught Stealing

Doug Pau from GamersBrand caught giving away thousands of US dollars worth or stolen content in a land traffic scam.

GamersBrand who run a hidden freebies warehouse under the floor of their main shop are giving away stolen content to attract people whos presence is improving their land traffic score.

In the photo you see that there are two copies of the QuantumCore/QHUD's retail box renamed as male and female genitals hidden away in a freebie pack designed for male noobies.

The same stolen content can be found in another box marked Radar HUD and yet another with similar freebies for women.

The glowing blue retail boxes seen here are clearly NOT genitals. So either Doug Pau didnt check, or didnt care, when he put other people's commercial products in his freebies warehouse.

While one might be able to forgive a noobie handing something to another noobie, there is no excuse for an established business with 3+ years of experience giving away obviously stolen items.

Doug Pau is either a criminal scammer who knows exactly what he is doing, or he is a brainless idiot. Either way there is no excuse for giving away freebies without authenticating that they are in fact free and not stolen.

Basing a business on the distrobution of stolen content should be a bannable offence in my opinion, and I will be doing my best to have him banned to ensure his invetnory of stolen goods are removed from secondlife.

2007 Scammer Caught

"urubu Maximus" who joined SL in 2007 has been caught selling stolen items to noobies for as little as $100L.

urubu Maximus Sold two stolen QHUD's obtained via permission exploits today. He was instantly detected. His customers were automaticly told the items they have are stolen. And I filed an abuse report for fraud, because he is knowingly selling stolen goods. QHUD will not function without a valid registration, so he is defrauding the customers as well as the creators.

His customer eagerly handed over the payment details from their transaction history and gave his name as the person who sold the stolen item without hesitation.

One can only imagen how much money this person has stolen from crators all over SL in the last 3 years. It is a pitty Linden Labs dont have a policy of charging people's credit cards to recover stolen money.

Viewer 2 Different .0

I live in Australia and eat Vegemite. Like most Australians I like to put cheese on top. When Kraft announced a vegemite with cheese included I though it was a great idea. Until they tried to be cool and named it iSnack 2.0. Everyone hated the name so much that Kraft withdrew the product from sale in less than a week.

Somtime trying to be cool is the fastest way to alienate your existing customers.

Linden Labs has just released the public Beta of Viewer 2.0. They have warned us that we might not like it, but think noobies will like it. So what does that mean?

Well, Viewer 2.0 looks fantastic visually. It's got a dark menu frame around it which removes all the eye strain associated with the old silver colour theam they previously had. From then on it becomes a game of hide and seek in the new sidebar to find all the functions which previously existed on the bottom menu bar.

On the plus side there is an icon based indicator for people who IM you that looks a little like the windows quick launch bar. On the down side it becomes messy if you are switching between conversations quickly. Each conversation gets its own seperate chat window. I think creators will have the most trouble with this when trying to give customer support to multipal people.

The IM windows themselves now have a fully blank line that is black with the avatars name, followed by what they said, so that every line of chat is now a minimum for 2 lines. This works ok until you get into a fast group chat where half of your screen space is waisted by black lines with nothing but the avatar's name on it. I hope the chat format becomes a configuable option, or else this is going to be very frustrating as people have to make the chat window bigger just to follow a converstation.

Most windows now have a minimize button. So if your like me and used to pressing the x, your going to find yourself totaly closing conversations that you only wanted to minimize. It might help if these little minimise/close icons were a bit further appart too.

One of the things I immediatly missed was the way the mouse changes to indicate Sit/Touch/Pay/Open/etc as the default action for a prim. The mouse shows only a Hand when the prim has a scripted action associated with it, but no indication as to what this action is. I'm sure those people who like Passive Sit-Based Orbitors are going to love this.

I was insulted by how this viewer treated my carefully thought out profile. The profile is an important expression of who you are in SL, and it has been shoved into the sidebar like it was an afterthought. People have to click on links just to see the full text in your profile. You could be forgiven for thinking it was the first step in removing avatar profiles totaly.

There are some strange things in the viewer behaviour which will make building frustrating. When you open the sizebar the whole world shifts to the left. The bar dosnt just overlay the inworld view like the current viewer, it pushes the world out of the way. This is going to become frustrating when you open the bar to load inventory into an object which is then shifted off the edge of your screen! Opening menus should not effect your camera position inworld. Lets hope they go back to the overlying of the menus and sidebars.

Builders will be thankfull that LL didnt mess with the building menu. It is still very familar so we should be able to instinctivly click on the right spots. I was impressed with how fast the invetnory in the contents tab loaded. I'm used to opening the QHUD and waiting 2 minutes for the contents to load, but it loaded instantly in the new viewer and appeared to be editable right away.

Being a Beta there are a bunch of strange graphics gliteches, especialy for HUDS, but it was the vanishing objects in-world that amused me. I touched on my multi product vending machine and the prim vanished while the texture was changing! It didnt just turn invisible as beacons could not see it either. It just vanished totaly! After a few minutes it reappeared for no apparent reason.

The script and notecard windows have been given a new font which is far to thin aginst the bright white background of the windows! Floating text is also suffering from the same thin font issue. They need to revert to the old font which was easy to read.

I'm sure this will all be sorted out by the time Viewer 2.0 comes out of Beta. In the meantime I can see I will be spending a lot of time in the JIRA to make sure in-world content looks the same in viewer 2.0.

Overall LL have done a good job making this viewer pretty for the Dot.Com generation, but I dont think they paid enough attention to the needs of creators, as the interface makes customer support harder.

There is clearly a long way to go in getting the in-world content looking the same on the new viewer. We dont want to go the way of web browsers where one page can look good in IE and bad in firefox.

The viewer programming team can take a cookie from the reward jar, but they have to eat it at their desk because they are not finished work yet!

Theives are Angry

Quite a few people on the Theives List have already contacted me. Some to applologise for not knowing an item they were given was stolen, and others have told me which shop sold them the stolen product. All good!

However, there is a small group of people who have threatoned me when they saw themselves on the Theives List. Oh no!

"Take me off the list or I will sue you for defamation" says one guy with no valid product registration and no payment into on file.

"My friend gave it to me and he didnt tell me it was stolen .... I wont tell you [my friends name]"says another person demanding to be removed from the theives list.

"you are going to paid for that" threatons the angry theif who didnt pay for the product!

It is amazing how people who didn't pay me for an item they have been using for months are only able to think of themselves when they get caught.

Not one of the people who have been "accedently" using a stolen item have offered to pay for it!

It leaves me wondering how much of an "accedent" it really was. Don't honest people want to do the right thing?

Theives List Open to Public

The Theif List database that I spoke about in the Die Scammer Die blog post is now open for the public to use.

This is an API designed to be used from a SecondLife script to detect someone who has been previously caught stealing content.

I have made this interface available so that creators can include it in their anti-griefer/anti-theft land managment devices.

Why does Ariu respond every time I say scammer?

For the last week I have been working especially hard at creating a system to detect, track, and report people who are using a stolen QHUD. By "stolen QHUD" I mean the real QHUD that I created which has had its permissions altered so it can be copied and transferred.

I have taken down a major scammer who was selling stolen QHUDs cheaper than me
Everyone using the stolen QHUD has been informed it is stolen
Several people with the stolen QHUD have paid for it.
I made Ariu feel guilty about something

I hear you ask "Ariu guilty, what is that all about?"

Well, apparently every conversation I have had publicly in the last week while building this "anti-theft tracking system" has been recorded by Ariu.

Ariu appears to have felt so threatened by my new "anti-theft tracking system", that he has posted to his blog about how I am persecuting him. ( See guilty post here http://blog.aozoratech.net/?p=221 )

Over the last week, every time I have said "scammer" Ariu has quoted me as talking about him.
Every time I spoke of content theft, Ariu has quoted me as talking about him.
Even when I complained that my Valentines Sale was undercut within hours by the scammers, Ariu still though I was talking about him, even though Ariu wasn’t even having a sale at the time I said it!

This all leaves me with one burning question:

Why does Ariu feel so guilty?

Less than 14 hours after activating the Theives List webpage I have caught and punished a scammer who sold a stolen QHUD in July 2009. (8 months ago)

The soon to be banned theif, YoungBlood Unplugged, was selling the QHUD to people for as little as $500L. Apparently he earned enough money to buy a real QHUD which he has now lost, along with his SL account.

YoungBlood's victim who saw herself on the Theives List contacted me to have her name removed from the list. After a little digging into log files we were able to uncover enough proof to file an Abuse Report to have YoungBlood Unplugged banned from SL.

As YoungBlood Unplugged had a valid QHUD registration, I immediatly canceled it. I then gave his registration to his victim who had contacted me.

So YoungBlood Unplugged ran around selling stolen QHUD's only to lose his own QHUD and his SL account with it.

Racist-Anti-Racists & Indian Students

Racist-Anti-Racists

These are the people that pop up and play the "race card" in an argument. They make the whole situation worse by looking for a racist angle in every argument. In doing so they obscure the real issues.

One such example is the idiots in the media on both sides who are yapping on about weather or not Australia is racist, because we have crime here.

When they should be talking about the motivation of criminals, which is to get money without having to work hard for it.

Criminals don’t care about race. They care about who has the most money. Who is easiest to take that money from. Who is less likely to fight back. What locations they are less likely to get caught when taking the money.

Once you understand the motivation of a criminal you can take steps to avoid being their victim. However, if people are deliberately inventing racial motivations to sell news papers, the true motives of criminals will be lost, and with them the steps one can take to be safer.

I'm not an Indian Student, but my mother also tells me: Don't go into dark alleys/parks. Don't show off your variables on public transport. Don’t go into unsafe suburbs alone, especially at night.

So why is that advice good when my mum gives it to me, but racist and bad when the police give it to the Indian Students?

My answer is because of the racist-anti-racists! The people who say they are anti-racists, but are really racist because they see everything in a racial context. They are the people who obscure the safety message behind a flood of their own racist rhetoric.

Now if the racist-anti-racists would shut up, and the media would stop interviewing them for their extreme opinions, the poor students would be getting a clear message about how to be safe!

I will leave you with the advice my mother gave me:

Stay out of dark alleys, they are where the bad people hang out
Don't walk in a park at night, that is where the rapists and murderers hang out
Keep your valuable hidden so criminals don’t know you have anything worth stealing
Never go into an unsafe area, and never go alone

All good advice when given to me by my mum, but according to some people, racist when given by the police to Indian students.

For the viewers at home: I knew this guy was scamming from the moment i checked my email and saw the stolen QHUD had emailed me his details. I just let him hang himself in IMs so I could AR him and have him banned too. There was never a chance of him getting a real product out of me.

The simple fact is that I will never give a copy of a product to someone who dosnt have valid payment details and a valid registration record. And remember that the registration record includes a copy of the payment ID, so using the same details a second time will be rejected by the registration server!

People like neil over at neillife.com think they are cleaver to alter the permissions on people's products so they can steal them. They think they are fighting against Linden Labs to gain their fame.
However all they are doing is mugging someone and stealing their pay. Like a gang of petty criminals they gang up and target a single creator, destroy their income, and brag about it as if they did somthing cleaver. So you screwed over an innocent stranger. That must make you a worthwhile person to know!

My First Scammer - Nightmare Dench

Way back in the dark ages when prims were less shiny and nothing glowed, I had a shop in Meyers where I met my very first scammer. NIGHTMARE Dench.

NIGHTMARE Dench being the genious that he is, decided to scam an unknown weapons maker, who hadn't even made a single sale of their weapon yet! That weapons maker was me in March 2007!

So from the moment Mr Dench contacted me to get a refund for a product he didnt buy, I knew something was fishy because I had not made any sales yet!

What follows is almost a "how to" guide on scamming, as Mr Dench tries every trick in the book until he meets a messay end at the hands of Lucy Linden.

McDonnalds coke price $1218.25 on hottest night in 100 years

Melbounre had its hottest night in 100 year on the 12th of January 2010. The tempreture didnt get below 30 degrees celsius at night, which it tipically the max tempreture for a summers day!

Lots of people like me went to the beach to cool off, and visited the beach side McDonnalds to get somthing cold to drink.

Apparently the demand for cold coke had reached such a level that the McDonnalds put the price up to $1218.25 for one large coke! (see photo of the drive though order display taken on my mobile phone on the night)

To be fair to McDonnalds the girl at the drive through window was as shocked as me when that price came up, and the manager did come to reset the price back to the correct amount.

It is funny that this happened on the hottest night in 100 years when buying a cold drink.

Long time SL member, weapons developer. Has developed SIM killing tech, and almost certainly used it, but never gotten caught. Dangerous, keep out a watchful eye.

Now the interesting thing about this is that back in 2007 when the above article was created the author Sen Pixie was on my friends list. Sen Pixie was also in competition with me for making and selling Tardis's in the land of Doctor Who. I was an estate manager for the shop there too.

I last spoke to Sen Pixie in 2008 when his vending machine was returned from the Doctor Who shop in Dimidia due to the owner of the land selling up and leaving SL. I told him I dont know what is happening and he apparently found his answer elsewhere. It was a perfectly polite conversation that gave no indication that Sen Pixie considered me to be "dangerious".

Now 3 years later I find out that someone who was in competition with me attempted to use the JLU as a means of having me banned.

This raises the question of how often this kind of dirty trick is used against a competing creator to gain a market edge.

I would hope the JLU will carefully search their wiki and remove any reference to me that are unfounded. With the exception that my avatar is so sexy that it might be a violation of the TOS.

I understand that they have a policy of not removing information, and I hope they understand I have a policy of seeking damages for defamation.

Cookies from God

Today God sent me cookies!

I have a sign on my door listing all the things I dont want to buy from door-to-door sales people. At the very end of the list it says "I will buy cookies" and "Don't wake me up without cookies".

Well these two guys from a local church went to the effort of buying chocolate chip cookie doe and baking it into cookies just so they could knock on my door.

As I write this blog post I am enjoying a plate of cookies from God.

Virginity

I just have to have a rant about an issue which has become a hot topic in Australia. One of our not so enlightened politicians, the Dishonorable Federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott, said that virginity is ''the greatest gift you can give someone, the ultimate gift of giving''.

Caveman Tony Abbott thinks that my hymen is more important than my mind, personality, and feelings! He has reduced my worth as a human being down to a body part which I lost the first time I used a tampon.

This guy doesn't even practice what he preaches. If a woman's greatest gift to a relationship is sex, then why the hell did Caveman Tony Abbott cheat on his wife?

Caveman Tony Abbott obviously still values the double standard where men can have sex with lots of partners but women can only have sex with the man they married. I wonder who these men are meant to have sex with if the women are busy polishing their chastity belts.

My grandmother burned her bra to teach men that double standards are not acceptable. Caveman Tony Abbott should take note that women are far more direct these days. Someone might burn him instead!

I call on all women to boycott Caveman Tony Abbott’s bedroom. Don’t let the caveman breed!

Customer Service is not always easy

I like to think I am known for fast and helpfull service, but it is not an easy thing to do. Somtimes people seem to do their best to provide me with little or no information.

Below we have someone who thus far has taken two days to tell me that someone somewhere needs a re-delivery.

Consider this a plea - "Please provide all the information that I will need to help you in your first IM. Please follow any instructions you are given, especialy if a vending machine tells you to forward your proof of payment. And finaly please read the notecard documentation so that I dont have to re-type it's content to you in an IM. Remember there are a lot more of you than there is of me, so try to make it easy for me to help you."

Would you file an abuse report against Eric Linden because someone placed one of the trees he made in an anoying spot? ...of course not! Then why is it that some people seem unable to apply that logic to weapons?

Mr II3ossHogg Blackheart who is a founder of a SL Marfia group is one such person who feels it is right to harass a creater when someone else is using the creator's product against them. I thought the marfia was made of tuffer stuff!

I tried to explain to him that I own regions and make all my RL money inside SL. Obviously I am not going to risk losing all that to grief him. Sadly he was unable to understand that any better than he could understand that the creator is not the owner.

Did internet censorship lead to Big Pond leaving Secondlife?

Big Pond is leaving Secondlife. They are Shutting down their islands, evicting residents, and removing the free data allowance to the Secondlife service for their Australian customers.

Big Pond is the internet carrier owned by Telstra, who is partly owned by the Australian Government.

Could this be related to the fact that the Australian Government is seriously considering blocking SecondLife under it's new internet censorship program?

I have personally written to the government about their plans to censor Secondlife and been told they are reviewing Secondlife.

Reviewing! That means they must consider it as a candidate for censorship. If it was not a candidate they wouldn’t bother reviewing it.

The problem is that MMOG's are not covered anywhere in the Australian classifications system. Secondlife has adult content, and Australia has no adult rating available for computer software. Australian software can only go to MA15. There is no R18 for software in Australia. In fact the government voted against adding one this year.

It is very likely people such as myself have pointed out to the Australian Government that Secondlife can't be in violation of the ratings laws if Big Pond is running an estate inside Secondlife. Big Pond being partly government owned.

So the question now is: Did the Australian Government ask Big Pond to close their Secondlife estate to avoid any scandal when they add SeconfLife to the list of websites they will block?

Linden Labs plans hostile takeover of vending machines and rented Malls

Linden Labs have sent a survey around asking if people are interested in an official Linden Labs vending machine network.

Key Feature:

Free Land to build a shop
Automatic linking to xstreetsl
Special Advertising on xstreetsl
A HUGE commission on all sales going to Linden Labs

I feel sorry for people who have worked long and hard to develop vending machine networks, like HippoVend who will be put out of business when Linden Labs moves into their market.

Then there are the private estate owners who will not be able to rent any mall space when Linden Labs is giving away free land for shops.

Creators will be forced to use the Linden Vending Network because they can't afford to boycott and stay in business.

Linden Labs are very similar to Microsoft in that they provide the platform. Content creators are now in the same position as companies like Netscape when Microsoft decided to expand their operating system to include popular applications like Internet Explorer. And we all remember what happened to Netscape when Microsoft did that!

Meanwhile the permission exploits that are putting content creators out of business by turning their products into freebies goes unfixed!

M Linden should be fired. Phillip Linden should return to control of the Lab before it crashes into an ice berg and sinks.

PS. I know it is very unusual for me to say bad things about LL, however this issue has enraged me. LL are looking at taking over the business of other residents to make some extra cash while creators are going to the wall due to permissions exploits!

Have you ever wondered how you can make money in SL without having any inspirational ideas?

It is easy. You pick someone with a iconic product like QHUD and you copy everything they do.

Check out this counterfit QHUD. Not only did they copy the appearance, they even copied advertising.

I have been playing a game of follow the leader for over a year with this person. Why would anyone buy a counterfit copy when they can have the original?

Check out the total cheek of this person. After copying my product, style, and even advertising layout, he has the gaul to put a copyright notice on the advertising picture. Someone should point out you can only copyright original works, and there is nothing original about a copy!

Of course this is nothing new. This person has a long history of copying the Quantum designs. It seems every time I release a new design some people feel they can slap their own brand on it and call it theirs.

The Criminal Personality

I thought I would share this one because it gives an insight into the mind of a criminal personality.

[22:40] Yorik Jinx: You are such a coward. Always going on and on about your shitty vendors and as soon as someone teases you, you have them banned. (Email 2 IM)

[22:49] Darling Brody: you can't say that you didnt ask for it.

Yorik Jinx's last IM came from his email address because his account was banned. He is no longer listed in search, and has lost all the items he stole along with his account.

Yorik Jinx is a classic example of a criminal personality. He blames his victims when he gets caught and punished. Criminals always have someone else to blame for everything that happens. They never take responsibility for their own actions or the consequences of those actions.

As if I don't have enough to do, now I have to blog about what I am doing to keep up with other people who are blogging about what they think I am doing.

For those people who don't know me, I am Darling Brody the eccentric (read: mad) content Creator who works inside SecondLife (secondlife.com)

I am probably one of the few people in SL who are not constantly having pixel sex, mostly because I have blown myself up so many times my pixels have all fallen off. Anyone who sees them, please send them to me.

So what do I do with my time?

Attempt to attend classes and learn something at University
Experimenting with prims and scripts to try and find interesting and useful effects
Reporting bugs and requesting new features in the jira.secondlife.com
Replying to customer questions via IM, PM, and EMail
Tracking down stolen content and getting it banned (thanks neil)
Scripting, documenting, and selling products inside SecondLife
Fixing broken scripted objects and sending out upgrades (thanks Linden Labs)
Answering the question "can I ask you a question"
And now, apparently, blogging about it all

What don't I do with my time?

Have a First Life
Grief people, despite the many IM's I get every day saying "stop griefing me"
Steal other people's scripts or ideas. (Everyone should profit from their ideas)
Violate my avatar with prims shaped like genitals
Harass other creators. (Theives do not count as creators)

Why do I have a blog?

To reply to some people who are blogging about me
Just in case I should think of something interesting and need to write it down!
...because I want to be cool too!
